Governing Bodies

Understanding U.S. College Sports Governing Bodies: NCAA, NAIA & NJCAA

What Are the Governing Bodies of College Golf?

If you’re aiming for a US college golf scholarship, you’ve probably seen acronyms like NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA....but what do they mean? And how do they impact your future?

In the USA, all college athletics, including golf  fall under a governing body. These organisations set the rules, structure the divisions, and determine eligibility for both academics and scholarships.

At Study & Play America, we help you find the right fit and that starts with knowing the difference between these three key organisations.

NCAA – National Collegiate Athletic Association

The NCAA is the largest and most competitive governing body in US college sports. It’s home to over 1,200 colleges and universities, split into three divisions:

Division I: Highest level of competition, large athletic budgets, full-time golf commitments

Division II: Strong balance between athletics and academics, some full scholarships

Division III: Academically focused, no athletic scholarships, but still high level golf

Why it matters for you:
If you’re aiming to compete at the top of college golf  or want maximum exposure for a future professional career. the NCAA Division I route may be ideal. However, Division II and III schools also offer incredible golf and academic opportunities.

NAIA – National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

The NAIA is a smaller but highly respected governing body, often overlooked by international families, yet it can be a fantastic fit.

NAIA schools are usually smaller, private colleges, and offer a more personal, flexible student-athlete experience.

Why it matters for you:
If you’re a strong golfer with solid academics but not quite NCAA D-I level, or if you prefer smaller class sizes and campus life, then the NAIA might be the perfect balance.

NAIA Golf Scholarships:
NAIA schools offer both athletic and academic scholarships, often with fewer restrictions than the NCAA.

NAIA Advantages:
Quicker coach contact rules (you can start earlier). Easier eligibility process for international students. Less intense travel schedules, more balanced student life.

NJCAA – National Junior College Athletic Association

The NJCAA governs two-year colleges, also known as junior colleges or JUCOs. These schools are an excellent stepping stone for student-athletes who want to develop their game and academics before transferring to a four-year university.

Why it matters for you:
NJCAA golf is ideal if: You’re still developing your game or academics. You want to keep costs low for the first two years. You want to gain experience and re-recruit into NCAA or NAIA after two years.

NJCAA Golf Scholarships:
Most NJCAA schools offer athletic scholarships, and some provide a pathway to full scholarships at top four year institutions after graduation.
